Motor City wasn't much fun - unless you're into car parts hung all over the walls. After having a beer or 3 waiting around, I walked a few blocks. There were a bunch of cute guys sharing a MJ smoke in a doorway. I stopped and asked for directions. (I got a pass of the smoke too)Turns out these 3 guys were playing music at the club nextdoor called CakeShop, and they were due to play in 20 minutes, which is why they were smoking they told me. So I came inside and watched Clarity play at CakeShop. The guitarist, Joe, was very handsome - little guy with bright blue eyes and shaggy hair. I had my eye trained on him most the performance. They didn't have vocals - it was waves of distorted and somber sounds. I liked it enough. If you live in NYC you should see them if you like Daydream Nation era Sonic Youth.
After they played I bought them all drinks...helped pack up the gear into their car. Talked shop with the bassist - as we both have Fender Jazzmaster bass guitars. And VERY DRUNK i somehow made it back to Hotel 17 around 2am. I think i made too hard a pass at Joe, as i thought he was digging me back...but when I mumbled about needing a place to stay he wandered away without an answer. Oh well.
